The Old
New World
The New Old World is a Black & White series I began after I completed the large Collage and Assemblage series "Revelation & Ruin" in 2021. Following the extinction themes in the earlier work, I wanted to continue with work that suggested another extinction event had occurred. These vignettes are intended to have a a post apocalyptic feel that is reminiscent of the photos taken in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bombs were dropped.
The characters and spectacular ruins of colossal sculptures, dinosaur fossils, and strange industrial landscapes suggest a highly advanced civilization that existed with large prehistoric creatures, while having the feel of life in the late 19th and early 20th century.
These works became almost completely impersonal as opposed to everything else I had made in the previous 20 years. I truly felt like I had worked through the big themes and personal narratives. With this new direction, I was simply interested on having fun and designing vignettes around a "New Old World". The following works focus more on a single "punchline" within the dark humor of the post apocalyptic world I wanted to explore. This is the style I am currently working in.
